My dalmatian dog can’t urinate ,please help !?

Help I have a 12yr. old male dalmatian . I think he is having trouble urinating . He goes outside and stands in the position to urinate I have not seen him go . This all started today. I know these types of dogs can have kidney stones. If it continues I will take him to the Vet. Is there something I can do for him at home ? What will the Vet do?

Take him to the vet now. You could be risking your dog’s health by delaying it. There is nothing you can do for him at home.

It could also be an infection of the urinary tract or bladder – may need some antibiotics to be prescribed by a vet.

There’s nothing you can do to help the dog. The vet can administer drugs or do surgery or insert a catheter to drain the dog’s bladder to prevent rupture. If the bladder ruptures, your dog is a goner.

You need to get him to an emergency vet right away,as if he has a urinary blockage,he is in danger of dying from a ruptured bladder or uremic poisoning, not to mention the pain he must be in.Can you imagine not being able to urinate? You would go directly to the hospital. So get going to the e-vet! They will catheterize him to drain the urine from his bladder and do x-rays or an ultrasound to find out where the blockage is.The dog may need surgery or a special diet and will probably need to be hospitalized for a day or two. But he will die if you don’t take him.

He is in grave danger. It is important to get him to the vet..as SOON as you can get there.

HI….I have a dalmatian that had this problem at 12 years of age as well. It turned out he had 6 bladder stones lined up “like a string of pearls” in his penis. He got really sick, and had to have emergency surgery on the 4TH of July to remove the stones. The vet had to use pressure to force the stones back into the bladder and the open him up and remove the stones from the bladder. My dog almost died. You should have gotten the dog to the vet right away. This is very painful for your dog. This is very serious, and common in dalmatians because of the way they process their urine. I hope it all worked out. If you can, post additional details, and let us know how your dog is. Good luck.

Your dog could have an acute retention of urine. If so then he is in mortal danger, get him to a vet quickly.

I had an experience of this with my pet.

    Bladder stones and diet change

We had a lot of trouble with bladder stones with our Hannah (a Cairn terrier), including an instances of acute retention which could have killed her, but a change of diet to a bland and natural one seem to solve the problem on a life long basis. Most vets seem to favour a change of diet.

For a description of Hannah’s problems and details of her case history please see –
